Responding to a mayday signal concerning a stricken yacht, skipper Alex Ingram and Provider were first on the scene. 30 miles south of Plymouth in strong winds and heavy seas they found the vessel with her sails blown out and no engine. At one point the yacht was on her side and taking water so the three people aboard with just a hand held radio were greatly relieved when Alex stood by and established radio contact for the first time. He was then able to use Providers’ VHF to pass on vital information to the rescue services. Alex waited until the Newquay Rescue Helicopter arrived, followed by the Plymouth and Salcombe lifeboats. The yacht was then towed to safety in Salcombe by the lifeboats.
A prompt response and excellent seamanship. Well done Alex and crewman Brian Ball.
