On 15th July Mevagissey was privileged to receive a royal visit by The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall with the harbour the focus of the visit. The royal couple arrived in Fore Street at 11 a.m, proceeded down Jetty Street to the Jetty where they were greeted by local dignitaries and the Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall. Accompanied by the Vice Chairman of the Harbour Trustees, Celia Blamey they were introduced to The Local Coastguard Team, Gig Club, Stuns’ls Shanty Singers (Who sang throughout the visit), The Harbour Master, Harbour Staff and families, Ocean Fish and showed great interest in Rodney Ingram demonstrating net making. The Royal Couple were suitably impressed when shown the Fishing News recent award “Best Fishing Port in Britain” where Mevagissey were narrowly beaten by Peterhead. They then went on to meet local businesses, organisations and members of the public making the visit a very informal and pleasant experience.
The visit ended at the war memorial were they met the parents of Elijah Bond sadly killed in Afghanistan.
